Q: I don’t fly often and don’t put many hours on my propeller, when should I overhaul my propeller?

A: The manufacturer has set a calendar time as well as a clock time after which your propeller should be overhauled. It is important because of the changes in procedures used when overhauling the propeller. These changes have been made to improve the quality of the work being done as well, Airworthiness Directives may have been introduced which may have an effect on your model of propeller. In addition, weather can do damage to propellers even if the plane is in a hanger when not flying. Of course planes which are in a hanger are less likely to have as many issues as those which are not in a hanger but regardless, moisture can enter the hub and cause issues. Additionally, improper maintenance over the life of the overhaul can have a damaging effect on the propeller. To be safe it is important to have the propeller overhauled per the manufacturer’s recommendation to maintain safety while flying.
